L.A. mayor on Citizens United: 'Jesus, these super PACs with super smears

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa popped into what would have been day one of the Republican National Convention on Monday and bemoaned Citizens United decision and the rise of super PACs.

"Jesus, these super PACs with super smears, anonymously giving money to a level I don't think we've ever seen in the history of any campaign anywhere," Villaraigosa told reporters. "There's something wrong with people that wealthy being able to buy an election and I'm hoping that after this election, no matter what happens, that we're going to take a good, hard, long look at fixing that situation."

Villaraigosa, the chair of next week's Democratic National Convention, said facing the first general election since the Supreme Court's landmark decision was "a scary prospect."

"We don't have that kind of money flowing in the super PACs and we're going to be outspent without question, but I think we're going to have the most intensive ground effort ever and we're going to knock on doors and talk to as many people as possible and I think we're going to win this election, but it's going to be very, very close," he said.
