Woman Arrested for Drunk Driving Claims to Have Swallowed a Half Bottle of Hand Sanitizer

"I just saw it there so I drank it."

Last week a Connecticut woman was pulled over for dangerous driving and issued a sobriety test. Blowing above the legal limit, she was arrested and charged with drunk driving.

Just what alcoholic concoction did her in? Hand sanitizer.

Drinking hand sanitizer is on the rise, as TheBlaze has reported before. When police in Middletown pulled over and tested Jennifer Wilcox, 36, she blew a 0.17 blood alcohol level, according to WTNH. It was then that she admitted to freely drinking half a bottle of the sanitizer.

CBS Local reports she was arrested and has been charged with driving under the influence. She was released on $500 bond.

WTNH interviewed Wilcox, who didn't show her face. Here's what she said about how much she drank:

"I just saw it there so I drank it," Wilcox said.

"How much did you drink," asked News 8's Bob Wilson.

"Half a bottle," replied Wilcox.

"Was it a big bottle or small bottle," asked Wilson.

"Big bottle," she said.

"Like a gallon," asked Wilson.

"No, but a big bottle. I don't know how big it was," she said."

Watch the report:

WTNH goes on to report that just 2 ounces of sanitizer holds about the same amount of alcohol as four shots. It notes Dr. Danyal Ibrahim from St. Francis Hospital saying serious illness can result from imbibing alcohol through this substance. WTNH then asked Wilcox if she ever thought she would die from drinking it. She said "probably not" but included that it was the first -- and last -- time she would drink sanitizer.
