Piven Reveals Her Friend Named Children After Welfare Director: 'The State' Has Become Their Father
October 30, 2012
"Janette took it seriously."
Socialist CUNY professor Frances Fox Piven is glad that one of her close friends has named her children after her state welfare director and laughs off the notion of the state being their father.
Piven's odd remarks were given at the The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in New York in April, where Piven was asked to address a large group of students on the history of welfare in America.
Piven began by recalling how the welfare system and their caseworkers were to provide for the recipients and their families.
"Some families had a lot of kids." Piven notes "One of my good friends in the welfare rights movement, Janette Washington, had eight kids. I think she named the last three after the welfare director."
Piven then laughs, "Remember feminists theorizing about how the state had become the father in the family? Well, Janette took it seriously."
