Fla. Man Drove More Than a Mile With a Traffic Sign Embedded in His Head Before Police Pulled Him Over

A 63-year-old man in a Florida hospital is expected to recover after hitting a traffic sign, which then became embedded in his head Sunday night.

The St. Augustine Record reported that Leslie Richard Newton kept driving for a mile and a half in his t-top Camaro with the sign he hit lodged in his head and didn't stop until police pulled him over. On Monday he was listed in critical condition with severe head trauma.

Police said alcohol was involved in the St. Augustine man's erratic driving that caused him to begin crossing the median.

The WTEV report stated that family said the retired EMT is lucky to be alive. Newton's brother said doctor's expect him to make a full recovery as his scull prevented the sign from making contact with his brain.
