Pro-Gun Advocate and Piers Morgan Clash in Fiery Debate Over 'Assault Weapons' Ban: 'What an Absolute Lie!

"I'm going to keep talking, so I suggest you keep quiet."

Author and gun rights advocate John Lott, Jr. appeared on CNN Wednesday to duke it out with Piers Morgan over the proposed ban on so-called "assault weapons." The interview was, at many times, tense as Morgan continuously talked over his guest, causing Lott to become increasingly frustrated.

At one point, Morgan calmly told Lott, "I'm going to keep talking, so I suggest you keep quiet."

After beginning his show with emotional testimony from the father of a Sandy Hook victim, Morgan pointed to a statistic showing that more than half of all mass shooters from 1982 to 2012 used either "high-capacity magazines," assault weapons or both.

Lott quickly refuted Morgan's statistic with a study that he said shows that the effect of another "assault weapons" ban would be minimal. But Morgan shot back that such a ban worked in Australia after one was passed after a mass shooting.

A few minutes into the debate, Lott accused Morgan of speaking over him and refusing to let him respond. That continued throughout the entire interview.

“You’ve been talking 80 percent of the time since the break!" Lott practically hollered.

"I'm going to keep talking, so I suggest you keep quiet," Morgan replied.

A heated back-and-forth ensued, with Lott demanding he be allowed to address several of the points the CNN host made about mass shootings.

"What's the point of having someone on," a frustrated Lott said. "You want to go and talk 90 percent of the time. Sir, you haven’t let me make a sentence."

Later, when Lott argued that Britain's "murder rate" is a third of that in the U.S. instead of citing the lower gun murder rate, Morgan exploded. "What an absolute lie!" he shouted.

Lott finally was able make a point. He cited murder statistics in Germany and England that increased after gun control laws were passed. Morgan quickly accused his guest of manipulating statistics to "suit your agenda."

"What you need to do sometimes is have shows about people who save their lives, like these 10 cases in just this last month December where people had to fire multiple shot to save lives," Lott said.

At this, Morgan literally shushed Lott. "Shh, shh," he said, indicating that he had to end the interview.

"I disagree with you passionately, but I respect your right to have your opinion," Morgan concluded.
