Veteran TV news personality and icon Barbara Walters is set to retire in May 2014, according to multiple reports.

Walters is expected to make the announcement herself, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will remain a co-host of ABC's "The View" until her retirement, and the network will air a series of specials chronicling her career over the next year, the New York Times' Brian Stelter reported.

The 83-year-old Walters was the first woman to co-host NBC's "The Today Show" beginning in 1974, and has been a trailblazer for female journalists.

Speculation about Walters' possible retirement swirled in recent months, after she fell during President Barack Obama's second inauguration in January and then contracted the chicken pox.
