Massachusetts Middle Schooler Suspended for Bringing Butter Knife to School So She Could Cut Her Pear

"It's a butter knife, she has braces, there was no intent at all there."

A 13-year-old Massachusetts middle school student received a one-day suspension this week for bringing a butter knife to school.

Morgan LaPlaume, a student at Wamsutta Middle School, told Boston's WXFT-TV she brought the knife to cut her pear during lunch, which she can't eat whole because of her braces. She said the assistant principal spotted it on the table and pulled her into his office.

"As we were walking to his office I asked him and he said you are not allowed to have knives in school and I said I was using it to cut my pear, I wasn't harming any other student and he said I know but it's the policy," Morgan told WXFT.

The school's student handbook says knives are strictly prohibited, but Melissa LaPlaume, Morgan's mother, said this is a ridiculous case.

"It's a butter knife, she has braces, there was no intent at all there," Melissa LaPlaume told WXFT. She's meeting with a guidance counselor on Monday.

Wamsutta's principal told WXFT they were simply following the policy outlined in the handbook.

Representatives from Wamsutta Middle School and the Attleboro Public Schools did not immediately return requests for comment from TheBlaze.
