White House Holds Off-the-Record Meeting With Reporters on Benghazi

​UPDATE: ​White House press secretary Jay Carney confirmed that a "background briefing" was held with members of 14 news organizations, as is done "periodically," but specifically disputed that it was "off the record."

Generally speaking, "off the record" means the information cannot be used for publication, while information given "on background" can be used without a specific person's name as the source.

The White House held an off-the-record meeting with certain reporters on Friday to discuss the recent developments about the Benghazi assault, Politico reported.

The meeting reportedly began around 12:45 p.m. and pushed the regularly-scheduled on-the-record White House press briefing back to 1:45 p.m. That briefing was ultimately rescheduled again for 3:15 p.m.

According to Politico, the off-the-record meeting was announced after ABC News reported that the Obama administration's State Department gave "extensive input" in editing the CIA's now-discredited talking points about the attack.
