A Wichita, Kan., teacher has been suspended with pay, officials say, following his arrest for possessing a gun on school grounds Monday.
A fellow White Elementary School employee saw Daniel Nagel, 31, in possession of a firearm at the school and called 911.
A USD 259 spokesperson said the gun was not loaded, and there was never any threat to anyone at the school, according to KAKE.
A family member tells Eyewitness News that Nagel was carrying the gun to protect students and never intended to do any harm, adding that Nagel has a concealed carry permit.
But Wichita Police say it's a moot point since the school is within a gun-free zone. Nagel faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed firearm and a $50 fine if it's a first-time offense.
Nagel has been taught physical education at White for five years and is on paid administrative leave pending completion of the school district's investigation.
