If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to climb the world's tallest building without actually going through the adrenaline-pumping risk of doing so yourself, you can thank National Geographic photographer Joe McNally for taking cameras on his recent ascent.
The climb up Dubai's Burj Khalifa began after 5 a.m. local time. A service elevator was used to take the crew up to the last concrete floor of the 2,722-foot building. Then they climbed a bunch of metal steps, followed by a straight ladder up to the top.

"It is a lengthy climb and it's physically daunting," McNally said.

Although McNally was wearing a camera on himself, other shots were taken, compiled and edited by Drew Gurian.
