Chicago Rep. Backtracks After Suggesting 'Maybe the Police Are Killing Some of These Kids

An Illinois state representative clarified comments she made this week that "maybe the police are killing some of these kids" in Chicago, saying she was only repeating what she's heard from people in the community.

State Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) first told a Detroit radio station on Tuesday, "There’s some suspicion – and I don’t want to spread this, but I’m just going to tell you what I’ve been hearing – they suspect maybe the police are killing some of these kids."

Asked by Chicago's WBBM radio whether she really thought it was possible that police are killing children, Davis responded: “I don’t know. I don’t know that they are, and I don’t know that they aren’t, since no one is being arrested, we don’t know who’s doing it.”

On Friday, Davis told reporters she herself does not believe the rumors.

"I said to her some people in my community believe police may be involved in some of these murders," she said. "That may perhaps be the reason they're not solved. Since then some of you have called and asked if I believe that. No I do not. I believe that the police work very hard to support our community."

A Chicago police spokesman told WGN-TV the rumors are "baseless and outrageous."
