Rep. Peter King: 'Al-Qaeda Is In Many Ways Stronger' Now Than Before 9/11

"It’s mutated and it’s spread."

Rep. Peter King said Al-Qaeda is "in many ways stronger" than it was before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and commended the Obama administration over the decision to shut down embassies and consulates in the face of a very "specific" threat.

“This is a wake-up call. Al-Qaeda is in many ways stronger than it was before 9/11 because it’s mutated and it’s spread and it can come at us from different directions,” The New York Republican, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said on ABC's "This Week." "And Al-Qaeda Arabian Peninsula is probably the most deadly of all the Al-Qaeda affiliates."

CNN reported Sunday that an intercepted message triggered the worldwide threat warning.

During his re-election campaign, President Barack Obama frequently invoked the phrase that Al-Qaeda was "on the run." During a major counter-terrorism policy speech in May, Obama said "the core of Al-Qaeda" was "on the path to defeat."
