1-Year-Old Boy Dies After Dad Knocks Firefighter Unconscious, Assaults Home Nurse -- Both Tried to Help Child Who Was Struggling to Breathe

the case is being investigated by child-abuse detectives

A 1-year-old boy died Saturday after his father attacked the boy's home-care nurse and a firefighter, both who were trying to save his son's life during a medical emergency.

The boy was under 24-hour home nursing care for an undisclosed medical condition, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The child began struggling with his breathing Saturday morning. The nurse on duty, Lisa Decatur, tried to help, police said, but the boy's father assaulted her. Decatur called 911 and two firefighters arrived, the Morning News reports.

Firefighter Michael Barrett tried to intervene, but the father punched him in the face, knocking Barrett unconscious. The other firefighter radioed for help, police responded, the father was handcuffed and removed from the boy's room, and then rescuers were able to perform CPR on the child.

The boy was then rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Morning News says.

It isn't clear why the father fought his son's rescuers, police said, adding that the case is being investigated by child-abuse detectives.

The father, whose name wasn't released, will be charged with assault and aggravated assault of a public servant, the Morning News says.

The injured firefighter was treated for his wounds at a hospital and was released.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
