The News Tribune out of Tacoma, Wash. reported that the unnamed 34-year-old soldier was stabbed in the chest when he intervened in an off-base incident where a 36-year-old woman was being stabbed in the back. The suspect arrested in the case was 29-year-old Chase Devyver, KOMO-TV reported.

The incident occurred before 4 a.m. Sunday.

"I didn't hear anything. I just woke up to the fire department and ambulance in front of my house," Joe'l Bilbo, a neighbor of the house in Graham, Wash., where a group of people gathered after a night of drinking, told KOMO.

A Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman told the News Tribune the soldier was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive her injuries.

Police say Devyver took the credit cards of the woman he attacked and fled the house, leading officers on a high-speed chase. The chase ended when the suspect hit a power pole. The newspaper reported that he was still uncooperative and police were forced to use a Taser to subdue him, Troyer said.

According to KOMO, Devyver was booked on murder suspicion and attempted murder. As of Monday, it does not appear that any formal charges have yet been filed against him.

“Unfortunately, we did lose a soldier today," the base's Public Affairs Officer Capt. Lonnie Collier told the newspaper, noting that no other military members, except the one, were involved in the incident.
