Report: Star HS Quarterback Jailed After Body Slamming School Security Guard

A star quarterback who reportedly has committed to play for Michigan State University in 2015 was arrested after allegedly body slamming a security guard in the hallways of his high school — and it was caught on cell phone video.

Jayru Campbell, a 6-foot-4 17-year-old junior, faces assault and battery charges in relation to Wednesday's incident at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, a source familiar with the situation told WJBK-TV in Southfield, Mich.

WJBK reported that the Detroit Public School police department arrested Campbell and remains in custody Thursday morning. A source told WXYZ-TV in Southfield, Mich. Wednesday that Campbell was being held at the Detroit Correction Center.WJBK reported that Campbell's charge is a misdemeanor.

Campbell led Cass Tech to back-to-back Division 1 state championships in 2011 and 2012. His Twitter profile reads "2015 4star QB! Commited (sic) to Michigan St University, #MoneyTeam. I don't dream chase no more... I DREAM CATCH !"

ChatSports noted that "reports are already circulating that MSU has pulled his scholarship as a result of the incident."

TheBlaze contacted Associate Athletic Director/Communications John Lewandowski at MSU for more information, but he said NCAA rules dictate that the school can't comment on players until they've signed a letter of intent.

Cass Tech football coach Thomas Wilcher told WXYZ Wednesday that Campbell did "get into trouble at school today," but Wilcher didn't comment further.

An argument between Campbell and the security guard led to the physical altercation, WJBK noted.

"Jayru's one of the hardest working kids I know. And he's smart," teammate Jamaal Brown told WJBK. "I think the whole situation was self defense. When somebody puts their hands on you, you got a right to defend yourself."

Campbell is already in trouble with the Detroit Public School League, which suspended him from the 2014 season's opening game for punching an opposing player in the handshake line following Cass' 28-0 semifinal loss to Novi Detroit Catholic Central last season, the team Cass beat in the previous two championship games, according to USA Today High School Sports.

Campbell at the time was suspended from school for three to five days for the hand-shake incident by Cass principal Lisa Phillips, USA Today HSS reported.

Cass coach Thomas Wilcher told USA Today HSS that he was surprised and disappointed that the suspension was made public.

"I'm for the Detroit Public School League and I want to follow the protocol, but I just think our kids shouldn't be displayed in any type of wrongdoing,'' he told USA Today HSS. "Why are we putting our kids in the public eye as bad people all the time? We do not have all bad kids."
