A Hail Mary Towards Faith': Beck Praises 'Unexpected' Movie in Theaters for Its Powerful Message on God

"An open-hearted attempt to find meaning."

Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman has created what Glenn Beck described as a wonderful and completely unexpected "faith movie" with "A Winter's Tale."

Goldsman joined Beck on his television program Wednesday from London, saying the movie, which is currently in theaters, represented a "Hail Mary towards faith" in his life.

"It was very personal," he said. "It's based on a book by a fellow named Mark Helprin that I've loved for many years, which I could never quite figure out how to adapt ... And a few years ago, my wife died very suddenly at the age of 42."

Goldsman paused, his voice slightly shaking: "It was one of those, 'I'll see you tonight, honey,' and I never saw her alive again. And that was enough for me. I was kind of done. And when I decided not to be done, I came back to this. And I wrote it as a way of trying to imagine and connect the dots of what I think of as the world behind the world."

Goldsman described the movie as an "open-hearted attempt to find meaning."

Though he admitted that isn't typical of mainstream movies today, he was shocked by how "vitriolic" the criticism was.

"I would sort of put myself toe-to-toe with a lot of people when it comes to reasons to be cynical," he concluded simply, "and faith is a choice."
