Big Rig Smashes Into Bridge Barrier, Killing Driver. Truck Teeters Over the Edge. How Does Passenger Get Out of This One?

"...could have broken up at any time."

After a truck smashed into a viaduct wall in southwest China, killing the driver and sending a third of the rig past the edge where it dangled nearly 70 feet off the ground, rescue workers had another problem on their hands.

The passenger.

Chen Keqi, squadron head of a highway rescue team covering Guiyang City, said: "At the time when our rescuers tied steel wires onto the roof, the truck shook a little — very dangerous," adding that it "could have broken up at any time."

So they used steel wires and a crane to hoist the passenger from the truck's cabin, according to Sky News.

"It was possible to fall from the 20-metre-high bridge amid the operation," said Yang Yongjin, head of the rescue team.

The passenger escaped with injuries to his feet and legs.

They got the truck back upon the bridge surface, too.
