The Man Who Helped Change Glenn Beck's Life Offers Profound New Advice Twenty Years Later

"Your story is your treasure."

Dan Millman, author of "Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives," truly changed Glenn Beck's life roughly twenty years ago.

"When I first read this book, I was an absolute wreck. An alcoholic that was just trying to find some truth someplace," Beck recalled with emotion on his television program Wednesday. "This book empowered me. It was one of the first steps in empowering me as an individual."

Millman appeared on Beck's television program to speak more about his message, and provide more advice to the man he so profoundly affected decades ago. But not before the 68-year-old described his background with an unexpected and remarkable feat of strength.

Without warning, the man leaped from his chair and performed a handstand on said article of furniture.

The former world champion gymnast coached gymnastics at Stanford, and transformed the team from the bottom tier to one of the top three teams in under four years.

"But I was noticing in my own life, being able to handstands and cartwheels and somersaults did not help me much when I went out on a date," he explained with a laugh, adding that it did not help when it got married, had children, or dealt with financial issues either.

It finally led to the question: "How can we develop talent not just for sports, but talent for living, for those challenges of everyday life?"

While Millman said everyone must be mindful of diet, exercise, and getting enough rest, there are six simple words that could change everyone's life: "Here and now, breathe and relax."

He asked the studio audience to stand up, take a brief stretch, and then sit back down.

He then asked how many could remember whether they actually breathed while standing up and sitting down.

Many of us, he said, hold our breath without realizing it, or breathe shallowly while focusing on other tasks during the day. He referenced a quote attributed to Mark Twain, which goes something along the lines of, "I've had many troubles in my life, most of which never happened."

He asked how many of our troubles are not actual events, but emotions? How much better would our lives be if we took a moment to breathe, release the tension, and take charge of our own lives?

"Your story is your treasure," he said. "That wonderful proverb - 'God invented men and women because God loves stories.' You don't just have a story - you're a story in the making, and you never know what the next chapter's going to be. That's what makes it exciting."
