Graphic Footage Shows Moment Police Shot & Killed Man Charging at Them With Hammer

"Turn around and put your hands on top of your head."

Newly released graphic footage shows the moment police in Albuquerque, N.M., shot and killed a man who charged them with a hammer after attempting to evade authorities.

The lapel video depicts the Dec. 8 incident, which had been kept from the public until police were able to complete an investigation, according to KRQE-TV.

Officers Hector Marquez and Nathan Cadroy were responding to an assault call from a 7-11 convenience store, KRQE-TV reported.

“There’s a man that’s following me,” the caller told the dispatcher. “He punched me in the mouth and was chasing me down the street.”

When the two officers arrived at the scene, they located Andy Snider, 37, and instructed him, "Turn around and put your hands on top of your head."

That command was ignored and video showed Snider, armed with a hammer, running toward them.

Marquez can then be heard telling his partner to fire non-lethal rounds at the man.

"Bean bag him, bean bag him!" he shouts.

The non-lethal rounds, however, did not stop Snider. He continued charging toward officers with a hammer. The video then shows officers fire several rounds at the man, who continued running.

Eventually the man falls to the ground in an alley. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to KRQE-TV.

At the time, former police chief Allen Banks said the incident started over a meth deal gone bad. Banks also said he told officers at the time to use less than lethal force, but that they had no choice to defend themselves.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, the shooting was the fifth in six weeks when it happened last December. Twenty-one individuals have reportedly been shot and killed by the police department since 2010.

The shooting also comes amid a U.S. Justice Department investigation over allegations of excessive force by the police department.
