Why Is Dr. Ben Carson Urging Americans to Read Saul Alinsky's 'Rules for Radicals'?

World-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson is encouraging Americans to inform themselves, saying that in order for America to exercise its true power, its citizens must be educated.

"We as Americans, as American citizens, need to understand a couple of things," Carson began in an interview with Glenn Beck on Thursday. "We are at the pinnacle of power, but in order to exercise that power properly, we must be informed. We must be well-educated. We must know who our representatives are. We must know how they voted -- not how they said they voted, but how they actually voted. And we must exercise that power by being responsible voters."

Carson encouraged Americans to read a wide variety of books, but specifically cited what is often described as the "playbook" of the left, "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky.

"The Alinsky-ites say, 'never have a conversation with your adversary because that humanizes them, and your job is to demonize them,'" Carson said. "In order to solve that problem, we must not allow ourselves to be manipulated. We must go out. We must talk, even to people with whom we disagree, and we must ask them, 'What kind of America do you want to have? What do you want to pass on to your children?'"

Carson said many aren't familiar with the principles laid out in "Rules for Radicals," and certainly have no idea the book is dedicated to Lucifer. Yet, because they have not yet educated themselves, they "blindly follow, like the pied piper over the cliff."

The famed neurosurgeon said one of Alinsky's tactics that is most apparent today is the "rabid" attempt to divide Americans, whether it is through class warfare, racial wars, or even the "war on women."

Carson said that's one of the reasons he wrote his latest book, "One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America's Future." He hopes to remind Americans that "we are not each other's enemies."
