Message on a Texas Bar Sign Leaves One Woman Disgusted — and the Bar Apologizing Profusely

"We are currently investigating the situation..."

A sign displayed outside a Texas bar that trivialized the issue of domestic violence went viral over the weekend after an angered woman posted it online.

“I like my beer like I like my violence, domestic," the sign outside Plano's Scruffy Duffies bar said.

Courtney Williams, who saw the sign and posted it to Facebook, told KTXA-TV she was stunned to see the local business making light of such a serious issue.

According to Williams, who is a survivor of domestic abuse, the bar was conveying the message “that domestic violence victims were no more important than the type of beer someone was drinking."

“I can relate; I can understand and unless you have been there, it feels very different," she added to the local CBS affiliate, calling the sign "disgusting" and "not funny."

The owner of the bar agreed and has now initiated an investigation to see who was responsible for the message.

“It has come to our attention that one of our female employees wrote something offensive without owner’s approval," a statement posted online by the bar said. "Domestic violence is something our family unfortunately has overcome in the past, therefore this subject is one we don’t take lightly."

"We are currently investigating the situation and proper actions will be taken immediately. We thank you for your patience and again want to ensure this is not our stance," it added.
