Husband Who Told Police He Was Sick of Changing Bedridden Wife's Diapers Accused of Killing Her in Heinous Way

"...acting a little weird."

John Dewees Jr. told police his wife Anja, 45, had been sick with liver disease for about four years due to her drinking. Confined to a bed most of the time, Dewees said he cooked and cleaned and also bathed his ailing spouse.

But one day Dewees, 49, drank some vodka and decided he'd had enough of changing Anja's diapers every day, police said.

So the Enfield, Connecticut, man picked her up, pushed her into a bathtub and punched her, killing her, according to the warrant for his arrest, the Hartford Courant reported.

He even lived with his wife's decomposing body in their house for a few days, police said, wrapping it with duct tape in a deflated waterbed mattress, WVIT-TV reported.

The station added that police found her last Thursday after neighbors reported Dewees "acting a little weird."

The medical examiner said Anja Dewees died of blunt force injury to the head with a skull fracture, and in addition sustained broken ribs, bruises and possible strangulation, WVIT reported.

A judge placed Dewees — who had slashed his wrists, police said — on a suicide watch. He's charged with first-degree manslaughter in his wife's death, the Courant reported, and had his bail reduced from $250,000 to $175,000; his next scheduled court date is June 10.

Dewees was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and has had a job in the aircraft manufacturing industry for 25 years. When the judge asked him about the status of his employment, the Courant noted Dewees' response: "Actually, I'm on vacation."

Dewees and his wife had one son, Joey, who told detectives that his dad was abusive to him and his mom for years, WVIT said.

But Carl Cianfarani, who told the Courant he's best friends with Dewees, described him as "a very good husband" with "a loving family."

"I don't see him hurting her in any way," Cianfarani added to the Courant.
