John Boehner: 'We Have No Plans to Impeach the President

"It's all a scam started by Democrats at the White House."

The idea of impeaching President Barack Obama is nothing but a "scam" cooked up by the White House to inspire Democrats to show up for the midterm elections,  House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said.

"This whole talk about impeachment is coming from the president's own staff, and coming from Democrats on Capitol Hill," Boehner told reporters Tuesday. "Why? Because they're trying to rally their people to give money and to show up in this year's elections.

"We have no plans to impeach the president. We have no future plans," Boehner added. "Listen, it's all a scam started by Democrats at the White House."

Democrats in Congress and the White House have put forward the idea that House Republicans may move to impeach Obama, and have said the lawsuit that Boehner plans to file against Obama could be a sign of later impeachment proceedings. The lawsuit will focus on Obama's implementation of his signature 2010 health care law.

Just last week, the House took a step toward passing a resolution authorizing the House to file that suit. The House is expected to pass that resolution this week, before the House leaves for August break.

Despite Boehner's comments, some Republicans have openly discussed impeachment, such as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, which in turn prompted some Democrats to say they need to worry about the possibility of an impeachment proceeding.
