John McCain Says He's 'Vetted a Number of' Syrian Rebels and 'They Can Be Trusted

"I know them."

It's an important question: If the U.S. is going to supply weapons to Syrian rebels, how do we know we're giving guns to "good guys" and not just arming the next Al Qaeda?

And who's going to vet the recipients of those weapons?

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) said he's the man for the job..

"I've vetted a number of them because I know them," McCain asserted on Fox News Saturday morning. “Hundreds and even thousands of them have been killed and slaughtered with these barrel bombs and tortured to death by Bashar Assad. They can be trusted. There are groups of them to be trusted.”

McCain went on to basically challenge naysayers to come up with any option better than arming so-called moderate rebel groups.

As you may have noticed, during the segment Fox displayed an old photo of McCain with a group of Syrian rebels.

That group of rebels reportedly turned out to be kidnappers.

As Rand Paul noted last June:

[People] say there are some pro-Western people [in the Syrian rebellion] and we’re going to vet them. Well, apparently we’ve got a Senator over there who got his picture taken with some kidnappers, so I don’t know how good a job we’re going to do vetting those who are going to get the arms.

...

I don’t think there are any good people in this war, and there are some tragically innocent people who are going to be caught in the middle. But i just don’t know that arming one side is going to make the tragedy any less.
