A Scientific Phenomenon Occurs When You Use a Plate to Create a Ripple Effect in a Pool

A video posted online this week is gaining attention for showing a scientific phenomenon that occurs when a ripple effect is created in a swimming pool using a plate.
After dragging a plate in the water, a pair of black circles form at the bottom of the pool and continue traveling until they reach the other side.

As explained in the video, the black circles are actually a shadow of two vortexes created by the action of moving the plate through the water.
Footage of the scientific trick has amassed more than 115,000 views on YouTube since being posted on Nov. 22.
