The Tarpon Springs, Florida, police officer who was fatally shot early Sunday was Charles "Charlie K" Kondek, a 45-year-old law enforcement veteran who once served with the NYPD, Bay News 9 reported.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department posted the officer's name on its Facebook page around 11:15 a.m., saying "our hearts and prayers go out to the Kondek Family and our deepest sympathy."
Kondek was a 17-year veteran of the Tarpon Springs police force and a father of five, authorities said.
A New York native, Kondek served as a New York City police officer for five years before moving to Florida.
Investigators were still examining the crime scene Sunday morning, where the shooter fled in a white Hyundai sedan, crashing into a power pole and a pickup truck, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Cecila Barreda said.
Further details are expected in a news conference slated for Sunday afternoon.
