After Losing 84 Straight Games, Team Receives Miracle on Court: ‘All of Us Jumped Out of Our Seats’

"We were all hugging and crying and screaming our heads off."

For the Climax-Fisher High School Lady Knights, winning was not a regular occurrence.

Since 2011, the western Minnesota basketball team had lost an astounding 84 games straight.

"People always make fun of you," player Michaela Burstad told the CBS Evening News.

"It's honestly embarrassing to lose that many games," Emily Love added.

However, despite the team's less-than-perfect record, coach Jonathan Vonesh told the CBS Evening News he was still impressed with his team.

"We lost a game 90-3," he said. "But those kids played like it was 5-5."

Vonesh said that the girls who remained on the team fought until the final buzzer in every single game they played — but particularly one game last month. In that game, the Lady Knights got off to an incredible start, actually leading the opposing team going into halftime.

"I just felt like, wow, we are in this," Heather Grove said.

"And the crowd was getting into it which made it even better," teammate Grace Bowling added.

Then trouble struck.

One by one, the team started fouling out, ultimately leaving only three of the most inexperienced players left in the game.

But the girls kept fighting.

According to the CBS Evening News, they played stellar defense, drawing fouls from the other team and then making the free throws.

When the final buzzer sounded, they were actually on top.

"All of us jumped out of our seats," Love said.

"We were all hugging and crying and screaming our heads off," Grove echoed.

"It was probably the best moment of my life," Adrianna Vasek added.

After the game, Burstad reflected on what it meant to win.

"You kind of learn that no matter what people say about you, if you keep putting in the time and effort, that it will pay off," she said.
