NBC's Chief Medical Editor Exits Network After Ebola Quarantine Scandal

"Covering the Ebola epidemic last fall in Liberia, and then becoming part of the story upon my return to the U.S., contributed to my decision..."

Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who served as the chief medical editor at NBC News since 2006, announced Thursday she was leaving the network.

The move comes months after Snyderman was embroiled in a scandal after returning home from covering the Ebola crisis in Liberia. The doctor said she would self-quarantine for 21 days, but a news outlet uncovered that she was not doing so.

Snyderman's exit also comes the same day gossip news-website Gawker reported that she "slurred and stumbled" throughout a Wednesday evening news segment.

"Covering the Ebola epidemic last fall in Liberia, and then becoming part of the story upon my return to the U.S., contributed to my decision that now is the time to return to academic medicine," Snyderman said in a statement. "I will be shortly taking up a faculty position at a major U.S. medical school."

"I have loved my nine years at NBC and I am proud of the work my team has done," she added, noting that "every moment has been an honor."

An NBC spokesperson said the network wished her success in future endeavors.

“Throughout her career with NBC News, Dr. Nancy Snyderman has provided her expertise on countless health and medical topics that are vitally important to our audience," the spokesperson said in a statement. "She’s been a valuable voice both on air and in our newsroom, and we wish her all the best.”
