‘I’m Going to Tell You Why He Resigned’: Ted Cruz's Theory on Why Boehner Decided to Leave Congress

"That is unsurprising."

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) offered an explanation as to why outgoing House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) unexpectedly announced last week that he would resign from Congress at the end of next month.

"You know this past week was a big news week in Washington," Cruz said during a lengthy speech on the Senate floor Monday evening. "The Speaker of the House John Boehner announced he was going to resign. And there was a lot of speculation in the media why the speaker of the house resigned. Mr. President, I'm going to tell you why he resigned."

Cruz, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, contended that Boehner cut a deal with House Minority Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to push through a continuing resolution that would fund all of President Barack Obama's controversial measures through December. That measure cleared the Senate Monday.

"In this instance, there were too many Republicans lead the Democrats rather than lead the Republican Party. I believe if Speaker Boehner had done that ... that he would have lost his speakership," Cruz said. "A member of the House had introduced a motion to vacate the chair. Because House Republicans were fed up with their leader not leading."

"So Speaker Boehner faced a conundrum," the Texas senator continued. "If he does he he and [Senate] Leader [Mitch] McConnell promised, he would have lost his job. And so what did he do? He announced that he is resigning as speaker and resigning as a member of Congress. That is unsurprising. But it also telegraphs the deal he just cut. It's a deal to surrender and join with the Democrats. Notice he said he's going to stay a month. He's going to stay a month in order to join with the Democrats and fund Barack Obama's priorities."

Over the weekend, an aide to Boehner adamantly rejected the notion that the speaker cut a last-minute deal with Pelosi, telling TheBlaze it was absolutely false.
