For the Record': The Threat of Islamic State Chemical Weapon Attacks on the West
January 04, 2016
Intelligence officials reported that the Islamic State has used chemical weapons in Iraq, and there have been warnings that similar attacks could be forthcoming in Europe or America.
A December 2015 report from the European Parliament warned that the Islamic State had recruited scientists to help design an offensive chemical or biological attack. It was also reported the group has smuggled weapons of mass destruction into Europe.
For the Record spoke with Professor Sergui Popov, a former Soviet bioweapons engineer, who said that after the fall of the Soviet Union, chemical and biological weapons were readily available on the black market. Popov warned that those weapon could fall into the hands of terrorists as they focus on launching weapons of mass destruction against the West.
