You're Not Going to Believe This': Audio Released After N.J. Mail Carrier Attacked by Wild Turkeys

"It's crazy. They're actually attacking."

HILLSDALE, N.J. (TheBlaze/AP) — A postmaster seems dumbfounded in a 911 call he made to get help for a New Jersey letter carrier who was trapped inside his truck by several wild turkeys.

The incident played out Tuesday in Hillsdale. The audio was released Wednesday.

The postmaster initially tells police "you're not going to believe this" before providing details about the attack, noting similar events have happened before. The police officer who took the call sounds equally amazed.

"It’s crazy. They’re actually attacking, biting, they chase the trucks, everything," the postmaster says.

Authorities say about seven turkeys accosted the letter carrier, but he wasn't injured.

Two officers scared off the turkeys so the letter carrier could continue his route.

“He was concerned that once we left they were going to go back after him,” Tom Smith of the Hillsdale Police Department said WCBS-TV reported. “I don’t know if he’s had a run-in with these turkeys before.”

Wild turkeys neared extinction a few decades ago but have made a comeback in New Jersey in recent years.

Referring to the postal service's motto, Hillsdale resident David Margolin joked, “Neither snow, sleet, rain or turkeys, I guess, kept them from delivering the mail today.”
