The father of a child with cancer is being hailed online as the #BestBaldDad after he got a tattoo identical to his son’s scar to help him feel less self-conscious.
According to ABC News, Josh Marshall’s son, Gabriel Marshall, 8, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma last year. Gabriel underwent surgeries to combat the cancer, which left him scarred.
“My son was very self-conscious after he got his surgery. He felt like a monster,” Marshall told ABC News. “I said, ‘You know what, I’ll get your scar tattooed. That way, if people want to stare at you, then they can stare at both of us.’”
Marshall entered a picture of him and his son in the St. Baldrick Foundation’s #BestBaldDad competition. He captioned the picture: “Me and my son at this year’s St. Baldrick’s event in Wichita, Kansas. Got my son’s scar tattooed to help his self-confidence.”
Marshall won the contest with more than 5,000 votes, and the picture quickly went viral.
“I never intended for it to be this big,” he said. “It was just a friendly competition between fellow cancer dads and people showing support for their loved ones who have fought cancer.”
“It’s amazing,” Marshall added. “I’m glad that I can kind of spread awareness for the childhood cancer community.”
Marshall said Gabriel is doing well and loves the tattoo. He tells people he and his dad look like "twins."
