Gary Johnson Addresses His 'Aleppo' Gaffe: 'I Have to Get Smarter

“I have to get smarter."

After Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson stumbled on a foreign policy question Thursday morning, he awkwardly attempted to clarify his remarks during a follow-up interview.

TheBlaze previously reported that Johnson replied, “What is Aleppo?” when asked a question about the city on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

As panelist Mike Barnicle noted, Aleppo is a city in Syria that is the “epicenter of the refugee crisis.”

Following his on-air gaffe, Johnson was interviewed by Bloomberg's Mark Halperin outside the studio. He admitted, "I'm incredibly frustrated with myself."

“Well, when you recognize what is going on in Syria, when you recognize that Aleppo is in the kind of the epicenter between — Aleppo! — not knowing that there’s a city in between the two forces, really at the epicenter of the — but not remembering or identifying that that’s Aleppo, um, guilty,” Johnson said.

Johnson acknowledged that he “understands the significance” of his gaffe of “not recognizing Aleppo.”

“I have to get smarter,” Johnson said. “That’s just part of the process.”
