California woman allegedly drives over her young son’s leg while intoxicated

“You could see the tread marks of the tire over his thigh.”

A California woman was arrested last week for allegedly driving over her young son’s leg while intoxicated, according to a press release from the Glendale Police Department.

According to police, Sharla Joseph, 46, was shopping at a supermarket Sept. 17 with her 5- and 7-year-old sons. As they left the store, she began to yell at them over “behavioral issues.”

Once Joseph got to her vehicle with her sons, she told them she was leaving them behind, police said.

She then got in the car and locked them out. The children were clinging onto the car’s handles as she began to back out of her spot. As she began to drive forward, the 7-year-old fell to the ground “and the rear tire of the vehicle drove over his leg,” authorities alleged.

Police said the boy was taken to the hospital for treatment but did not “sustain any significant injuries other than pain and bruising to his thigh area.” The other boy was uninjured.

“You could see the tread marks of the tire over his thigh,” Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William told the Los Angeles Times.

Police reportedly administered field sobriety tests at the scene, and Joseph performed “poorly.” She was charged with a felony DUI involving injury and two counts of child endangerment.

The children are in the care of family members, and the Los Angeles County Department of Child Services is investigating the incident.
