Police say home burglary suspect was unarmed — but that wasn't the case with the homeowner

“In fear for his life..."

A Georgia homeowner took matters into his own hands Tuesday night after hearing someone break into his home around 11:30 p.m.

Police say the unidentified homeowner grabbed a shotgun after hearing the intruder inside his Atlanta home. The homeowner then approached the suspect, who was not armed, firing one round at him. That's when the suspect ran back into the room through which he had entered the home, but the homeowner followed and fired a second shot, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Police say the break-in suspect, identified as Spencer Bohannon, was shot at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

“In fear for his life, [the homeowner] fired one round at [Bohannon],” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said, according to the Journal Constitution.

Bohannon was charged with one count of burglary. The homeowner was not charged.
