President-elect Donald Trump thanked the "African-American community" on Thursday for not coming out to support Democratic presidential rival on Election Day.
During remarks at a “thank you” rally in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Trump thanked “smart” black voters who stayed at home rather than supporting Hillary Clinton.
Trump said he talked about crime, education and jobs with black voters and asked them, “What the hell do you have to lose?”
“They’re smart, and they picked up on it like you wouldn’t believe,” Trump said. “And you know what else? They didn’t come out to vote for Hillary. They didn’t come out, and that was big. So thank you to the African-American community.”
Trump also thanked the Hispanic community, saying, “People that are in our country legally — if they’re Hispanic — they don’t want people coming in and taking their jobs, they don’t want people coming in taking their homes.”
Trump earned only 8 percent of black votes, according to exit polls, compared to Clinton’s 89 percent.
