Huma Abedin files for divorce after Anthony Weiner pleads guilty in sexting case

Huma Abedin, a top aide to former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, filed for divorce from Anthony Weiner on Friday, the same day the disgraced former New York congressman pleaded guilty to a charge that he sent sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl, the New York Post reported.

According to the Post, Abedin brought an “Anonymous vs. Anonymous” action in Manhattan Supreme Court and asked the court to seal the case.

Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August after a report surfaced that Weiner had exchanged explicit messages with a different woman while lounging in bed next to the couple’s young son. The couple reportedly attempted to reconcile in the aftermath of the scandal.

Weiner pleaded guilty Friday to sending explicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl last year. The girl, who has not been identified, told the Daily Mail last September that Weiner knew she was underage while they communicated.

According to ABC News, Weiner offered an apology to the teenage girl in federal court Friday.

"I have a sickness," Weiner said, "but I do not have an excuse."

ABC News reported that the former congressman agreed to surrender his iPhone and will register as a sex offender. Weiner’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 8.

Weiner's attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, said in a statement to ABC News that his client "accepted full responsibility for the inappropriate, sexually explicit communications he engaged in early last year. He apologized, offered no excuses, and made a commitment to make amends."

During the FBI’s investigation into allegations that Weiner sent sexually explicit messages and images to the underage girl, the bureau discovered emails relevant to their investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state. The discovery of these emails prompted former FBI Director James Comey to re-open the Clinton email investigation.

After her loss, Clinton indicated that she considers Comey’s decision a factor in the outcome. Comey was recently fired by President Donald Trump, which prompted allegations that the president was trying to thwart the bureau’s investigation into Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the election.

Weiner has previously faced a series of sexting scandals that resulted in his resignation from Congress and derailed a New York City mayoral bid.
