Mandy Harvey, a contestant on this week’s episode "America's Got Talent," delivered a moving performance of a song she wrote about losing her hearing.

With the help of a sign language interpreter, Harvey, 29, a deaf singer from St. Cloud, Florida, told the judges that she began to sing as a child and sought to resume music after losing her hearing.

“I lost all my hearing when I was 18 years old,” she said. “I have a connective tissue disorder, so basically I got sick and my nerves deteriorated.”

Harvey said she was determined to continue performing music. She told the judges she used "muscle memory, using visual tuners and trusting my pitch” to pursue her passion. She stood on the stage in bare feet so she could feel the tempo of the music.

“After I lost my hearing, I gave up,” she said. “But I want to do more with my life than just give up.”

The original song she performed — titled “Try” — was a testimony to that refusal to give up. In addition to singing, Harvey also played the ukulele during her performance.

Members of the audience could be seen wiping away tears. Judge Simon Cowell, famous for his sharp reviews of performers, was visibly moved.

"Mandy, I don't think you're going to need a translator for this," Cowell said, as he pushed the show’s “Golden Buzzer,” indicating that Harvey had qualified for the show’s live rounds.

Cowell expressed amazement at the performance.

“I've done this a long time and that was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen and heard,” he told Harvey. “Honestly, I never think I'm going to be surprised or amazed by people, and then you turn up.”

“Just the fact that you are you, but it was your voice, your tone, the song was beautiful,” he added.

Harvey expressed gratitude for the moment on Twitter.
