A 13-year-old boy stopped a vicious attack on his mother that could have resulted in her death — and the alleged attacker was none other than his own father.
What are the details?
Anthony Maurice Whitlock, 35, was arrested after a Friday incident in which he reportedly attacked his ex-girlfriend — and the mother of his three children — with a three-foot replica samurai sword, reportedly amputating several fingers and leaving her in critical condition, according to WZZM-TV.
WZZM reported that Whitlock allegedly kicked in the door to his ex's Battle Creek, Michigan, home early Friday morning while she and their children slept and began attacking her with the weapon.
Police told WZZM that the 13-year-old son woke up during the attack and attempted to break up the scuffle, reportedly pushing his father away from his mother.
According to WZZM, police said the boy "may have grabbed a steak knife and tried to stab his father" and noted that the child was the one to call 911.
WXMI-TV reported that the suspect fled the scene when the boy reached 911 and was caught shortly after he left his ex's home.
"The 13-year-old jumped on the man and was able to get them separated to where the mom started to be able to get away," Sgt. Todd Elliott told WXMI. "However, then the man went after her again."
Elliot added that the woman's attack was "gruesome" and voiced his concern for the children.
"That was a pretty horrific thing to be present for," he said.
Elliott added that law enforcement gives a lot of credit to the young boy who intervened in the attack.
"That was a very brave thing that he did, not just being able to call 9-1-1 but to try and intervene and stop this guy from attacking his mom," Elliott said.
WZZM reported that the female victim sustained injuries to her torso, hands, arms, and legs, and at the time of this writing, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Whitlock was charged with assault with intent to murder as well as home invasion.
