Dad of Fla. school shooting victim educates those pushing for gun-free schools: 'Freedom of choice

Andrew Pollack, a Parkland, Florida, shooting victim's father, has some advice for those people who don't want armed teachers or guards roaming the halls of public schools: If you want a gun-free zone, enroll your child in a school that doesn't allow firearms on the premises.

What did he say?

"You have the choice to go to any school you want, so my answer to them is, 'If you don't want a teacher or a marshal or you don't want someone with a gun at your school, you go to a gun-free school zone. That's where you go,'" Pollack told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday.

Pollack reiterated his point of view that it should be up to parents as to whether they want to send their children to schools with armed teachers or armed guards.

"This is America, and it's freedom of choice, right?" Pollack said.

Does he have a point?

Pollack attended last week's meeting in which President Donald Trump discussed school safety, and tossed out the idea of arming teachers.

Andrew, during the meeting, told Trump that he was "p****d," adding that he refused to rest until the Trump administration fixed school security.

A new Florida law, enacted for the 2017-18 school year, allows students to attend any school in any Florida county without boundary restrictions.

The only caveats to the law, HB 7029, state that parents must provide transportation to and from the school, the school must have the enrollment space, and the student must not be subject to disciplinary actions such as suspension or expulsion.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Broward County schools have had this open enrollment option for some time.

Is there anything else?

Pollack's daughter, 18-year-old Meadow, was one of 17 victims in thes Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Feb. 14.

Many people criticized Pollack in the days after the shooting for wearing a pro-Trump T-shirt in a photo while looking for his daughter. At the time that the viral photo was taken, Pollack did not know his daughter was among the dead.
