Woman with beaten face blames cops; internet makes it worse. But there's more to the story.

An Illinois woman says police are responsible for the grotesque facial injuries she received during an arrest.

Social media took it from there, creating embellishments about the cops' actions, and forcing the story to spread like wildfire, according to WFLD-TV.

A witness to the woman's arrest — as well as the police chief — relayed an entirely different account of events that did not involve police beating the woman.

Now authorities are looking into pressing charges against those who spread malicious lies on social media, adding fuel to the fire.

What happened during the arrest?

Sauk Village police arrested Andrea Morris after she was reportedly trespassing on her ex-girlfriend's property. Morris's ex said that she was worried that Morris would break the windows on her home, according to WFLD.

According to the station, Morris resisted arrest three times during the incident.

On Morris's third time, a Sauk Village police officer reportedly tased Morris, and she fell onto the sidewalk, face-first.

WFLD reported that officers took Morris to the hospital to be checked out and then straight to jail.

While in custody, Morris livestreamed a phone call on Facebook with her injuries in full view and, according to WFLD, said that the police caused her injuries.

"The police tased me, I don't even know what happened after that, my whole face is f****ed up," she can be heard saying in the video. "I look like a different person."

In another portion of the video, Morris can be heard saying, "I don't know what the f*** they hit me with. They f***ing tased me."

Later, she tells a caller she identifies as her grandmother, "She [the ex-girlfriend] did this and the police did this. ... My face is all f***ed up, grandma."

Throughout the video, Morris repeats that the "police did this" no fewer than 10 times and talks about a lawsuit and that she's "finna get paid."

"The sergeant did this, matter of fact — the sergeant," she adds.

Morris's video quickly went viral, with at least one commenter alleging that police "beat" Morris in her sleep, according to the station.

Morris faces charges of trespassing and resisting arrest.

And what are police saying now?

Police have completely denied abusing the woman during her arrest.

According to Morris's ex, who remains unnamed at the time of this writing, Morris was only tased and not beaten.

Sauk Village Police Department Chief Robert Kowalski denies any accusations of police brutality, according to WFLD.

He added that the department will be in contact with the state's attorney's office to see what their legal options might be with regard to those spreading misinformation.

"We will definitely discuss this matter with my detective and run it past the [state's] attorney’s office to see if there’s anything we can do legally against any individuals who is promoting these allegations against the police department," he said.
