The man who was videotaped this week stealing a teenager's red "Make America Great Again" hat and throwing soda on him at a Texas fast-food restaraunt is speaking out about the incident following his arrest.
Kino Jimenez, 30, was arrested Thursday night following the viral incident, which happened around 2 a.m. on the Fourth of July at a San Antonio Whataburger. Police arrested him on a warrant charge of theft of a person, which is a felony.
According to KSAT-TV, Jimenez spoke upon his release from the county jail on Friday. However, he only spoke to reporters after they turned off their cameras.
Jimenez characterized his actions on Wednesday as a "lapse of judgement" and "out of character," according to KSAT. But he admittedly became enraged when he saw the teenager's "MAGA" hat, likening the headwear to hooded caps work by the Ku Klux Klan.
Jimenez was released from jail early Friday morning after posting $5,000 bail.
Officer Carlos Ortiz, a spokesperson for the San Antonio Police Department, said the fact that Jimenez was charged with a felony is unusual in a case like this, but told KSAT the police department has received numerous phone calls from concerned citizens who believe the charges should be stiffer.
