Six dead in killing spree that happened over multiple locations in Bakersfield, California

A killing spree left six people dead in east Bakersfield, California, and the massacre took place in five different locations in less than 15 minutes, KBAK-TV reported.

What happened?

The mass murder unfolded about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday when an unidentified man and his wife confronted a man at a trucking company,  according to Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

Kern County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene following reports of shots being fired at a trucking company on Manwell Boulevard, near Highway 58 and Weedpatch Highway, Bakersfieldnow.com reported.

The suspect shot and killed the man and then turned the gun on his wife, killing her. He also shot at an employee of the trucking company who walked in on the altercation. The suspect missed on the first shot but chased down the employee and killed him, according to reports.

Next, the suspect went to a nearby home and gunned down two more people, Youngblood told media.

Finally, he carjacked a mother and her child, but they were not injured, according to reports.

After the massacre, a sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspect driving on Edison Highway. When the suspect pulled into a parking lot, the deputy confronted him at gunpoint. The suspect died after he shot himself in the chest, according to reports.

All of it was captured by the deputy’s body camera, according to reports.

Are the killings related?

Youngblood believes the killings are related. But officials are still trying to determine why they happened. It is unclear if some of the victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

At the time of this writing, the suspect was not yet named. One weapon was recovered as evidence, reports state.

“I’m pretty comfortable there will be a connection between all of these players,” Youngblood told the media. “We’ll try and make those connections in the next day or two."

More than 30 people were reportedly interviewed during the initial investigation, and five search warrants  were served. Deputies and investigators from other departments are continuing to investigate.

Was this unusual?

Youngblood told media he could not recall a similar case of this magnitude.

“Six people lost their lives in a very short period of time," he said. "This is highly unusual."
