Utah lawmaker tells people to 'mellow out' after he tries marijuana for first time on video
October 26, 2018
In an effort to support marijuana legalization in his home state, a Utah lawmaker tried marijuana for the first time in a video that he shared to his Facebook page.
State Sen. Jim Dabakis, who wants voters to approve legislation to legalize medical marijuana, told everybody to "mellow out" after he tried a cannabis-laced gummy bear in Las Vegas. Medical cannabis is legal in Nevada.
“I felt a little high, a little okay, but it didn’t change my life,” Dabakis said in the video outside a Las Vegas dispensary. “Everybody, mellow out. Recognize that this is nothing to be afraid of. The people that are terrified by it seem to be the people who never tried it.”
Proposition 2, if approved, would legalize cannabis use for those with certain qualifying conditions.
In the video, Dabakis said he didn't believe any of his state's senators had ever tried marijuana so he decided to try it before voters head to the polls Nov. 6, adding that he was making the "sacrifice" to try it for the taxpayers.
What happened?
Dabakis posted a follow-up about his experience, which he called "a lot of ho-hum," the next day, adding that "the reefer madness crowd needs to try it."
"No big deal," Dabakis said. "No big deal."
He called on voters to approve the measure.
"Vote for Prop. 2," he said.
