Megyn Kelly may exit NBC with $30 million lining her pockets.
What are the details?
A new report from Page Six reveals that sources familiar with the situation say Kelly, who is leaving the network after making controversial blackface remarks, will terminate her three-year, $69 million contract with NBC and walk away with about $30 million.
Kelly and NBC parted ways in October after Kelly made what many people believed were inappropriate remarks about blackface and Halloween.
During an all-white panel discussion on Oct. 23, Kelly questioned why wearing blackface would be offensive during the Halloween season. She added that dressing in blackface was “OK” when she was a child “as long as you were dressing like a character.”
Kelly faced heavy criticism after her remarks, which prompted her to issue a companywide apology.
The next day, Kelly’s “Today” co-anchors, Al Roker and Melvin Craig, said that Kelly’s apology wasn’t up to snuff, and insisted that she apologize to all people of color for the remarks.
Kelly did just that during what would be her final appearance on “Megyn Kelly Today.”
The following day, Kelly was no longer a part of the production. NBC canceled “Megyn Kelly Today” on Oct 26.
What about the negotiations?
A source reportedly familiar with inside negotiations told Page Six, "Everyone wants this to be over — both Megyn and NBC — and Comcast has the money to pay off Megyn. We thought this would be a done deal a few weeks ago."
Another source added, "NBC decided rather than fight and face a lawsuit from her, they — and more importantly, Comcast, with all its money — decided to draw a line under the entire debacle and pay Megyn the full amount owed in her contract to go away."
"This is far from the end of her TV career," the source added. "In the Trump era, there are few broadcasters like her. Megyn would likely take a short break from TV and return to cable news ahead of the 2020 election."
Page Six reported that Kelly is already planning her TV return.
Reps for Kelly and NBC declined to comment on the report, according to the outlet.
