Activist David Hogg ridiculed on social media over his 'performative' response to new CDC guidelines

Gun control activist David Hogg faced an onslaught of online ridicule and mockery over his admission that he will continue wearing a mask despite the CDC reversal on their necessity.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Thursday that Americans who were fully vaccinated no longer needed to wear a mask in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. While many celebrated the loosening of restrictions, some on the left responded with stunned incredulity.

Others like Hogg said they would continue wearing masks despite the new guidance from the CDC.

"I feel the need to continue wearing my mask outside even though I'm fully vaccinated because the inconvenience of having to wear a mask is more than worth it to have people not think I'm a conservative," said Hogg.

"I feel like this is something you can especially understand if you're in a very liberal area where 99% of the people you see are wearing masks," he added in a second tweet.

Hogg's tweet was met with immediate and fierce backlash from those who saw it as a naked admission that wearing a mask was performative virtue signaling.

"Sick burn man, hope peddling pointless ideological division is fun for you," responded conservative activist Benji Backer.

"Masking was always about political signaling for a big chunk of team blue, and their incessant lying about it until now should not be forgotten," replied radio host Buck Sexton.

"So what you're saying is you're going to continue this performative bulls*** despite science saying otherwise, not because you care about protecting people, but because your 'moral superiority' needs to be constantly validated? sounds about right for a lib like you," replied a Twitter user.

"Because you're afraid the way people would treat you if they thought you're a conservative? This should make you think about how 'tolerant' Democrats are," said another user.

Among those on the left expressing trepidation at the revised CDC guidance was MSNBC host Rachel Maddow who said she would need to "rewire" herself to accept unmasked Americans as no longer a threat to her health.
