Anxiety, Tourette sufferers will soon be able to legally smoke weed in Pennsylvania

The state has added to its list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has announced that anxiety disorders and Tourette syndrome will soon be added to the list of qualifying conditions for patients to obtain certifications to use medical marijuana.

What are the details?

PDHS Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said in a press release Thursday, "After careful review of the medical literature available out these conditions, I have to decided to approve this recommendation," adding, "I do not take this decision lightly, and do have recommendation for physicians, dispensary pharmacists and patients in terms of the use of medical marijuana to treat these conditions."

Levine also noted that "medical marijuana is not recommended to treat children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, as their brains are still developing." The press release did not say, however, whether there were any age restrictions under the expanded rule, which goes into effect July 20.

Pennsylvania legalized medical marijuana in 2016, according to The Hill, which reported that there are currently 111,000 patients actively participating in the state's program. The PDHS says there are more than 1,100 physicians who have been approved under the program.
