An armed homeowner in Bloomington, Indiana, quickly discovered that firing a shot into the ground wasn't going to scare off an intruder moving toward him at his residence Sunday afternoon — but a second shot finally did convince the crook that he was out of his depth.

What happened?

A man said he was at home in the 2300 block of South Brandon Court with a juvenile when he heard someone trying to break into his residence, the Bloomingtonian said, citing a police report.

The homeowner then opened the front door and asked the man — whom he didn't know — to leave the property, the outlet said.

The homeowner also went to retrieve a .40 caliber handgun, the Bloomintonian added.

But rather than departing, the suspect began looking inside the home through windows, the outlet said.

With that, the homeowner confronted the suspect, who was coming toward him, the Bloomingtonian noted, adding that the homeowner fired a single round into the ground.

However, the fired gun apparently wasn't enough to scare off the intruder, who began to argue with the armed homeowner, the outlet noted.

Incredibly, the suspect then put his hand up and began moving toward the homeowner again, the Bloomingtonian reported.

Once again, the homeowner fired a shot, the outlet said. This time it may have been too close for comfort. The Bloomingtonian said the suspect fled.

The outlet said witnesses confirmed the narrative to police, and their description of the suspect was the same one the homeowner gave police.

Soon police found a man matching the description in the woods behind Crawford Apartments and took him into custody, the Bloomingtonian said.

The 28-year-old suspect also admitted to attempting to enter the residence in question, the outlet said.

The suspect is being charged with residential entry, a level 6 felony, the Bloomingtonian reported.
