Students stabbed at California high school during brawl, 4 injured

A southern California high school went on lockdown after several students were stabbed during a brawl involving about a dozen students.

News cameras caught video of students being wheeled out of Van Nuys High School Wednesday morning. Officials said they were called to the school at about 11 a.m.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said that three students were stabbed and one was in critical condition, according to KCAL-TV.

The school was locked down as officials investigated, meaning no one could leave and no one could enter the premises.

LAUSD Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said in a statement that two students had been stabbed, and two others were injured in the fight.

KCAL interviewed a mother of one of the students that was apparently involved in the fight and had been injured.

"My kid called me and told me that he got jumped inside the school by, I guess, ten individuals and they say that six others were stabbed," said Raquel Medina.

"My son wasn't stabbed," she continued. "They're trying to figure out who did it, how did they get in the school? Or if they were students in the school, they don't know yet."

Medina said her son was being taken to Sherman Oaks Hospital after being kicked in the head and his body.

"The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority," read a statement from the district in part. "There is no current threat to our campus and all student and staff remain safe. All appropriate procedures were implemented according to District policy."

There are about 2,200 students at Van Nuys High School with another 200 students on campus at a continuation school.

Classes at the school are expected to resume Wednesday afternoon.
