California man charged with killing 11-year-old son now sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually exploiting underage girl

A California man who was accused of killing his 11-year-old son in 2020 has now been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually exploiting a young girl, according to prosecutors involved in the case.

Jordan Piper, 38, of Placerville, will have to serve seven and a half years of supervised release once he has served his time for sexual exploitation. Prosecutors stated that Piper placed a GoPro camera behind a wall outlet to secretly record several videos of the young victim taking a bath and exposing her genitals, according to CBS News.

U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb sentenced Piper to 15 years behind bars, a punishment agreed upon by the prosecution and defense attorney. However, the sides could not come to agreement on the duration of the parole following the prison sentence. Shubb ultimately decided on seven and a half years of probation.

Piper has been in custody since February 4, 2021, after he and his wife were arrested for the alleged murder of their 11-year-old son, Roman Lopez. The authorities discovered the boy's body in a storage bin in the the couple's basement in Placerville, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Piper pleaded guilty in March to sexual exploitation of a child related to incidents that took place between October 3, 2019, and January 9, 2020. During the investigation into Roman's death, the authorities seized digital devices, including a digital camera. Investigators found evidence on cell phones that Piper had recorded videos of the underage girl.

FBI investigators said that the videos depicted the girl using the restroom and taking baths. The girl was said to have been living in Piper's home in Groveland at the time the videos were captured. The Sacramento Bee reported that the FBI affidavit stated Piper apparently sent the girl sexually explicit text messages "concerning a sexual 'Christmas gift,'" and he offered the girl $250 to use it.

“Mr. Piper made terrible decisions related to this case. He placed a recording device in a bathroom at his home, and he has great remorse for violating the privacy of all those who used the room,” Tasha Paris Chalfant, Piper's attorney, wrote in a court document.

“He also acknowledges he behaved in an inappropriate manner with the minor victim via text messages.”

Chalfant went on to say: "He [Piper] completely lost himself as well as his moral compass, and he has tremendous remorse and shame for his conduct in this case.”

“Mr. Piper is reflective and dedicated to living an honorable life again.”
